Making a history tier list

History tier lists work best when the question is specific. Ranking eras by how much you would want to live in them is a genuinely different exercise from ranking them by significance, and the second one is much harder to do honestly.

Ranking inventions by impact rather than cleverness produces the more interesting list. Unglamorous things like plumbing and refrigeration climb a long way, and that is usually the point.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a history tier list?
Pick the question first - most significant, most interesting to study, or most survivable to live through - then rank eras or inventions against it. History lists fall apart when those get mixed.
What is the best way to rank historical eras?
By a single stated criterion, and ideally one that admits it is subjective. An era can be fascinating to read about and dreadful to have lived in, and a good list says which it is measuring.
