Tier list rankings
Editorial tier lists with the reasoning shown - our ranking of a subject, why each item landed where it did, and a template so you can argue with it.
Every ranking here states its criterion before it starts, because almost every disagreement about a tier list is really a disagreement about what was being measured. Each one links to a template so you can build your own version rather than just reading ours.

How we rank things
Every list here states its criterion in the first paragraph. That sounds like a small thing and it is the whole game: most tier list arguments are not disagreements about the items, they are two people measuring different qualities and assuming the other is wrong. Rank fast food on taste and you get one list; rank it on what survives a car journey and you get another, and both are defensible.
The rankings are opinions, and they are labelled as opinions. We do not present them as survey results or community consensus, because we have not run a survey - inventing numbers to make a ranking look authoritative is the single fastest way to make it worthless.
Each article also shows its working. A placement without a reason is just an assertion, and the reasons are the part worth reading even when you disagree with where something landed. If you do disagree, every article links to a template loaded with the same items so you can build the version you think is right.
