Fast food tier list

This fast food tier list ranks the standard menu items from S tier down to F, judged on one question: which would you actually order if you were only allowed one thing.

How this list is judged

Ranking whole chains is a trap, because averaging a good side against a bad burger lands everything in B tier. Items are the honest unit. The criterion here is repeat orderability - not which tastes best once, but which you would still want on the fourth visit running, cold-tolerance included, because a lot of fast food is eaten in a car.

The reasoning, tier by tier

SFries, Fried chicken
Both survive the journey home, which almost nothing else on this list does. Fries are the only item people order as a side, a main and a snack without it seeming odd, and fried chicken is the one thing where the fast food version is genuinely competitive with a restaurant making it properly.
ACheeseburger, Chicken nuggets, Soft serve
The cheeseburger is the benchmark of the format and loses to fries only on consistency - a bad one is genuinely bad, whereas bad fries are still edible. Nuggets are near-indestructible but monotonous. Soft serve earns its place by being the only dessert that is reliably identical everywhere.
BOnion rings, Milkshake, Hot dog, Chicken wrap
Solid and unremarkable. Onion rings are excellent for ninety seconds and disappointing after that. Milkshakes are too filling to order alongside anything, which is a real cost. Wraps exist mainly to feel like a better decision than a burger, which is not the same as being one.
CFish sandwich, Mozzarella sticks, Breakfast wrap
All three are conditional. The fish sandwich is fine and almost nobody's first choice. Mozzarella sticks are a texture that only works within a narrow temperature window. Breakfast items are only ever ranked against each other, which flatters them.
DLoaded nachos, Salad, Iced coffee
Nachos are structurally doomed - the toppings and the crisps arrive at incompatible moments. Fast food salad is a category error rather than a bad product. Iced coffee is the item most likely to be genuinely poor, because it is where the gap between fast food and a competent cafe is widest.

What the ranking shows

The pattern across the list is that the top tier is not the most exciting food, it is the most robust. Fast food is eaten in bad conditions - in a car, cold, twenty minutes late - and the items that hold up under those conditions beat the ones that need everything to go right.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best fast food item?
On this ranking, fries. They work as a side, a main and a snack, they tolerate being eaten cold better than anything else on a fast food menu, and they are consistent across almost every chain.
Should a fast food tier list rank chains or items?
Items. Ranking whole chains averages their best and worst products together, which is why chain rankings so often end up with everything in the middle tiers and nothing settled.
Is fast food ranking regional?
Heavily. Menus, recipes and even the same branded item differ by country, so a ranking that makes sense in one place can read as nonsense in another. Add your local items rather than assuming a default list covers them.
