Making a desserts tier list
Dessert rankings expose the split between what people order and what people actually make, which is usually a wide gap. The restaurant answer and the home answer produce two different lists, and deciding which one you are building is the first real choice.
Watch out for temperature bias. Warm desserts consistently outrank cold ones in the moment, so a list built after dinner looks very different from one built in the abstract.

Frequently asked questions
- How do you rank desserts?
- Decide whether you are ranking what you would order out or what you would make at home, then place each dessert from S to F. The two contexts produce genuinely different lists.
- Is ice cream S tier?
- On most lists it lands in A rather than S, because it is reliably good rather than exceptional. S tier usually goes to something with more occasion to it - the dessert you would plan an evening around.
- Should chocolate and fruit desserts be ranked together?
- They can be, but expect chocolate to dominate. If your list is turning into a chocolate ranking with a few outliers, splitting it in two produces a more interesting result on both sides.
